There he started working for Monsieur Marechal, a successful trunk maker and packer. It was there that he developed his talent for luxury bags. And this passion and talent soon paid off: in 1852 Louis Vuitton’s name came up, when the wife of Napoleon III was looking for a personal packer and box maker. The word was that he had the best craftsmanship for already seventeen years. In 1852 Louis decided to start his own business in Paris. Quickly he became more famous, as he used canvas fabric instead of leather and other materials. This resulted in great durability and waterproof quality. He was also well-known for creating the trunks’ upper, flat cover (boxes used to feature rounded upper cases, which made handling and packing difficult).
